January 26th-30th Parent Newsletter

Happy Monday! It’s our last week of January already. I hope it was a good month for you. Here is our news for this week.

Last Week: We are starting Book D in homework. We are still practicing marking vowels so please continue to do that. We have also started special sounds. I will send home the charts for the special sounds today. For their class work they will be asked to circle special sounds. Sometimes there may be two special sounds in a word and that is okay, they will circle both. So you can practice words with two special sounds for homework as well. I may send home an example.

Phonics:  We are starting special sounds and we are marking vowels. We are also practicing our short and long vowel rules. Here are the rules the kids should memorize and know how to do. If there is one vowel in a word, it makes the short vowel sound, and we put a smiley face on top. Long vowels: If there are two vowels in a word, the first vowel makes the long vowel sound, it says its name, and the second vowel is silent. You put a stick on top the first vowel and you cross out the second. We will be saying these every day in class and I encourage you to practice saying them at home.

Numbers: Review number families, practicing one or two families a day. Practice counting nickels and adding them, counting by 5’s. We are also starting with small word problems this week.

Memory Verse of the Week: “U” “Unto Thee, O God, do we give thanks.” Psalm 75:1

Events: January 30th – Dress Down for $1

February 16-18- Winter Break

Don’t Forget: Make sure to check snack schedule as well as Show and Tell schedule every day. Please sign chart in folder every day. We will be having a marble jar party soon. Just so you can be prepared, our theme will be children around the world. We just finished our Children Around the World Social Studies lessons and for our Marble Jar party they can dress up like a child from their favorite country. We have gone over the United States, Mexico, Peru, England, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Kenya, China, Japan, and Australia. I will give more details about this when their marble jar is filled!

Homework:

Monday: Study “U” memory verse, study Book C pages 6-7 and Blend Book page 44. Practice marking vowels and identifying special sounds. Review the penny, dime, and nickel, addition, and time.

Tuesday: Study “U” memory verse, study Book D pages 2-4, My Blend and Word Book page 45, practice marking vowels, rules, and identifying special sounds, review number names, the nickel, and more or less for example: Which number is more 5 or 7?

Thursday: Study “U” memory verse, Study Book D pages 5-8 and My Blend and Word Book page 46-47, practice marking vowels and practice rules, Review number families, money (penny, dime, and nickel), time, addition, and more or less.

Happy Tuesday! Hope you all enjoyed the day your kids had off!

Last Week: We are starting Book C this week for homework. The kids did a great job with Book B. We are also working on Book D in reading circles. Make sure to practice marking vowels at home and go over the rules. I am adding one more part to the long vowel rule.

Phonics:  We have started marking vowels this past week and are practicing our short and long vowel rules. That way when they are marking vowels, this will be going through their head as they are working.

Numbers: Review number families, practicing one or two families a day. We are also learning what ½ of a whole is and I am introducing the nickel this week.
